Do You Have a Resource Guarder?
The Happy Dog Journal™️- Free weekly dog news!
Hi Gang
This week, I was chatting to one of my students when they happened to mention their dog has an “issue” with people going near their food. My student had assumed all dogs froze and growled when people passed the bowl.
While resource guarding is a common occurrence (and frankly, if anyone was poking about with my chocolate in the fridge, I would also growl), it is not particularly pleasant for humans or dogs. It could even be dangerous if you have small children in the vicinity.
So, I sent them a copy of a video I made a few years ago. It’s a masterclass in dealing with various kinds of resource guarding while still being fair to your dog. To solve a behaviour, we first need to understand why the behaviour is occurring and then find ways to give the dog relief from the struggle that is causing the behaviour.
Grab a pen and paper, as you will want to make notes.
You can find the video here:
Spotted and sharing.
I saw this meme and wanted to yell “YES” at the screen. So many idiots subject their dogs to being grabbed, ridden on, laid on, having their things touched, fur pulled, and more by their kids. The dog may tolerate it, but stop and think - is this fair on the dog? They are not toys. They are animals with very real feelings and very strong teeth. They do not realise they can be put down for snapping at or biting in self-defence against some little terror who keeps torturing them.
As parents, it is your job to keep your dogs and children safe.
My other posts - because I write about other stuff too!
Have a great weekend!
